May 6th to 7th, 2014, Chinese Economics Inter-Disciplinary Innovation Seminar was held in Beijing. In order to address new progress in economics from home and abroad in recent years, and to provide a platform for academic discussion over the latest advances in theoretical studies, Unirule Institute of Economics as a NGO concentrated on economics took up this chance to organize the conference.

This conference was hosted Unirule Institute of Economics with graceful support from Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology, Center for New Political Economy at Fudan University, Dong Furen Foundation, Innovation Center for Rural Economic Restructuring and Collaboration at South China Agricultural University, and Zhongtian Economics Research Center. At the beginning, representatives from the hosts, Mr. MAO Yushi, Professor SHI Zhengfu, Professor MAO Zhenhua, Professor GAN Dean, Professor LUO Biliang, and Mr. TAO Yongyi gave welcoming speeches.

There were seven units on May 6th. Professor Justin Yifu Lin, Professor SHENG Hong, Professor MAO Zhenhua, Professor LUO Biliang, Professor SHI Zhengfu, and Professor LU Feng hosted the units respectively. Professor Yew-Kwang Ng gave a speech on “How to Undertake Theoretical Innovation” on Unit 1 with Professor CHEN Ping commenting. He addressed one aspect of the debate on Friedman’s methodology of positive economics: are unrealistic assumptions acceptable? He argues that the answer depends on the context. If simplifying assumptions do not change the results in a misleading way, they are acceptable.

Professor CHEN Ping reported on “From Equilibrium Economics to Complicated Evolutionary Economics” and proposed his understanding of the evolution of economic methodologies, i.e. from linear analysis to non-linear analysis, from equilibrium to non-equilibrium, from stationary state to non-stationary state, and from singular to plural.

Mr. TAO Yongyi spoke on “Mutually-Benefiting: The Logic of Economics” and proposed to use the assumption that human beings are mutually-benefiting, instead of selfish and self-interest, to be the base of classic economics from the perspective of real life references from the financial market.

Professor YE Hang spoke on “Neuroeconomics” and shared his findings in the impact of direct current stimulus on human’s preferences which leads to decision-making in economics.

Professor Justin Yifu Lin reported his “New Structural Economics”, and proposed that less developed countries should employ the comparative advantage theory to adjust and pivot to its potential comparative advantage in order to achieve economic growth. He also took questions from the audience.

Professor HUANG Kainan reported on “Comprehensive Study of Evolutionary Economics Theoretical Innovation”. He proposed a unified analyzing framework that adopts cognitive modes of human beings and evolutionary economics.

Mr. WU Si and Professor GAO Wangling reported their findings from a historian perspective on Unit Seven. Their findings provided positive evidence for economics research.
