On June 18th, 2014, kick-off meeting of “Business Ethics Declaration of Chinese Entrepreneurs” was held at Unirule Institute of Economics in Beijing. Joining the meeting were Professor MAO Yushi, Honorary President of Unirule; Professor YAO Zhongqiu (Qiufeng), President of Unirule; Professor ZHANG Shuguang, President of Unirule Academic Committee; Professor SHENG Hong, Director of Unirule; Mr. WANG Weijia, President of General Wireless Communications; Professor LIU Yejin, Capital University of Economics and Business; and Ms. LIU Yan, Editor of Caijing Magazine.

Professor YAO Zhongqiu (Qiufeng) first introduced the goal, framework, contents, and principles of the research project. He pointed out that this research project aimed to speak for contemporary Chinese entrepreneurs, discover and explain the ethical and normative realizations of Chinese entrepreneurs. And then after condensing and summarizing, this research project would end up proposing a set of ethical principles. Professor YAO also emphasized the open-drafting style of the project by which more entrepreneurs would be included and their diversified voices heard.

Professor MAO Yushi mentioned that entrepreneurs were the key to the wealth creation process where “talents and resources are put into best use.” He explained that value could be created and destroyed by labor, and it was entrepreneurs that help the society to best allocate its resources. By mobilizing resources, entrepreneurs helped to achieve economic efficiency. The ethical declaration could also be considered a declaration of capitalism. Therefore, it was very important to carry out this research to help entrepreneurs with their role in the society and self-identification.

Mr. WANG Weijia thought that Chinese entrepreneurs were in a process of self-awakening. When individuals are respected, they can contribute to the public good. Therefore, what’s urgent is to establish a sense of personal rights and to advocate the protection of personal rights. The so-called “original sin” only occurred in industries that were closely tied to power, whereas “new industries” maintained a sunny image in the society. Therefore, what’s important to the rectification of entrepreneurs is to protect personal rights and entitlements, and to avoid rent-seeking behaviors.

Professor LIU Yejin thinks exchange has a progressive meaning and human civilization advanced as a consequence of exchange. Those people who first engaged in exchanging were entrepreneurs. Therefore, the exploration and expansion of markets were undertaken by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are problem solvers. They unite people to push resource allocation to equilibrium. Entrepreneurs are also those who creatively destroy the old order. Professor LIU also said that the “original sin” was not ethical flaws of the entrepreneurs but sins of the “old regime.” At last Professor LIU said that entrepreneurs are the guardians of liberty, peace and justice.
