September 21st, the 11th UCERC Saloon and the 3rd Seminar on “Business Ethics Declaration of Chinese Entrepreneurs” was held in Hangzhou. Present at the seminar were Professor YAO Zhongqiu, President of Unirule Institute of Economics; Professor FENG Xingyuan, Director of Unirule Chinese Entrepreneur Research Center; Mr. FAN Jun, Deputy Office Head from Zhejiang Gongshang University R&D Department; Mr. XIANG Guopeng, President of Zhejiang Gongshang University School of Management; Professor ZHU Haijiu from Zhejiang Gongshang University School of Economics; and Mr. MAO Linbo, CEO of Zhejiang Nanpai Film Production Co., Ltd. All the experts and entrepreneurs joined the discussion and proposed suggestions for further modification.

Professor YAO Zhongqiu first presented the second draft of Business Ethics Declaration of Chinese Entrepreneurs to the participants. The Declaration consists of three parts. The first part illustrates the role of entrepreneurs in the general social structure, introduces the ethical and moral role or the entrepreneurs, and the importance of entrepreneurs in the accumulation and creation of civilizations; the second part looks back to the traditions of Chinese entrepreneurs and puts forward the concept of Junzi(gentleman) entrepreneurs and celebrates their contribution in the transition of the Chinese society in modern times. It also shed light upon the fraction and restoration of the tradition over the last six decades. And the last part of the Declaration introduces the concern of contemporary entrepreneurs and proposes the highly concise ethical decree of Junzi entrepreneurs of China.

All the participants spoke highly of the significance of the Declaration while pointing out that for ordinary entrepreneurs it was also important to have some bottom lines, or minimum ethical requirements, and for leading entrepreneurs, more strict moral standards should be set up.

Professor XIANG Huopeng thought contemporary Chinese entrepreneurs were a special group. And the general attitude of the Chinese society towards this group was complex. Against this backdrop, Junzi entrepreneurs emerged as a part of the entrepreneur group. Professor HAN Xueyong proposed to substitute the concept of Junzi entrepreneurs with the concept of Rushang(Confucian Businessman). He thought that according to the traditional understanding of Junzi and entrepreneurs, the ultimate goal of entrepreneurs was to obtain money, and the ultimate goal of Junzi was to pursue righteousness regardless of material rewards. Even those who put righteousness and material rewards together could not be considered as Junzi.

Professor HE Liye from Zhejiang Gongshang University thought that the Declaration emphasized what the entrepreneurs should do instead of that they should not do. Despite the concerns bothering contemporary Chinese entrepreneurs, the Declaration should also stress the rights of entrepreneurs.

Mr. MAO Linbo was one of the entrepreneurs present at the seminar. He spoke from his post-80s Zhe Businessmen(
