The 14th Annual Conference of Institutional Economics Held in Beijing

December 13th- 14th, the 14th Annual Conference of Institutional Economics was held in Beijing. This conference was jointly held by China Association of Institutional Economics(organizing committee), Unirule Institute of Economics, and Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology.
This conference received a total of more than 120 papers. After expert review, 81 papers were selected to be discussed at the conference. More than 120 participants from more than 60 academic institutions and universities joined the conference.

Professor ZHANG Shuguang spoke at the opening ceremony and emphasized that, “the Annual Conference of Institutional Economics has been held for 14 years and the purpose of this conference is to promote academic discussion. Many scholars have made great progress in their research by participating in this conference.” Professor ZHANG also pointed out that the aim of this conference was to discover and encourage more young scholars who would be the backbones of China’s academia.
In this annual conference, keynote speeches, seminars and commentaries, Q&A were adopted in the five workshops.
Five keynote speeches were made during the conference, namely, Rule of Constitution and the Fiscal and Tax Reforms, The Political Logic of the Reform of State-Owned Enterprises, The Choice of Managerial Form of Agriculture: The Logic of Transformation, Delegating Power and the Chinese Miracle: Critiques of the Theory of Local Competition, and The Legal Foundation of Central Banks. As these keynote speeches were closely tied to the current reforms and transformation of China, heated discussion and debate were witnessed.
There are five thematic workshops at the conference, namely, The Application and Extension of Theories, Land and Agriculture, Regional and Administrative Policy, Finances, Trade and Industries, Institutional Analysis of Enterprises and Factors.
After scrutinized review and careful discussion, five prize winning papers were selected:
At the evening salon, Professor MAO Yushi, Honorary President of Unirule, addressed the participants. He reemphasized his belief in the free market economy and illustrated that the reasonable allocation of resources and transaction were the real source of wealth. His humidity, rigorousness, and elegance won applauses.
Participants at the conference spoke highly of the significance of the conference on the research of China’s economics and the social transition, and thought more progress should be made to the annual conference in terms of organization, quality, and participation. Constructive suggestions and proposals were made.
