Biweekly Symposium No. 563: China Needs a Law of Religion.
Lecturer: LIU Peng Host: MAO Yushi Commentators: ZHANG Qianfan, ZHOU Qingfeng, GUO Shu
Professor LIU Peng spoke on the necessity of a Law of Religion for China which involved the relation between religion and the state. He emphasized that there had been a lack of such a law to regulate the increasing religious group ever since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. He stressed that rule of law was the solution to China’s religion related issues. The conventional administrative measures such as edicts and regulations were not sufficient to manage religious issues that were usually associated with the public. He proposed that religious issues should be considered an issue of people’s livelihood, which requested rule of law and constitutional principles.
Professor ZHANG Qianfan, Professor ZHOU Qingfeng and Professor GUO Shu commented afterwards.
